The February issue of the JDR starts with a tribute to the passing of the first African American President of the IADR, Dr. Clifton Dummett. The former director of the NIDCR, Hal Slavkin gives a beautiful memoriam of Dr. Dummett’s legacy (http://jdr.sagepub.com/content/91/2/117.full). The February JDR also showcases an editorial written by Drs. Petersen and Phantumvanit highlighting the advancements of Fluoride Use in Asia (http://jdr.sagepub.com/content/91/2/119.full). They discuss the outcomes of the workshop held March 22-24, 2011 in Phan-Nga, Thailand sponsored in part by the IADR. In the editorial, there is a nice showcasing of the companion proceedings in the JDR supplement, Advances in Dental Research that provides a nice series of papers by working groups at the workshop (http://adr.sagepub.com/content/current). It is hoped that this assembly of papers will advance the knowledge in the effective use of fluoride to help prevent dental caries in this part of the world.
There is an excellent perspective article (http://jdr.sagepub.com/content/91/2/122.full) in the JDR authored by Peter Milgrom and Jay Tanzer discussing the recent publication by Papas and the Prevention of Adult Caries (PACS) collaborative group (http://jdr.sagepub.com/content/91/2/150.full). The perspective and corresponding research report highlight the potential use of chlorhexidene for the prevention of dental caries in adults providing some provocative discussion on prevention and treatment.
